What are the most trustworthy US animal welfare organizaions?

I have been working on educating people about the horrors of puppy mills and the HSUS website has been a great help. I wonder, however, how trustworthy it and other organizations like it really are. I hate to be so jaded and suspicious but I know that a lot of organizations that work for humane causes can’t always be trusted 100% either because they misues funds that are donated, don’t really do what they claim, etc. Can anyone give me some info? I really want to make a difference and work for animal welfare in my state and would like to know what organizations are best to utilize. Thanks!
