. asked: Remember, animal rights means no pets, no cute talking dog movies, TOTAL animal liberation, no human use of animals, no service dogs, and the future home of a mental institution(PETA, ALF).
Animal welfare is advocating the ethical treatment of animals (ASPCA).
I am a very strong advocate of animal welfare but I am probably seen as crazy not because I might be but because of the animal rights freaks made it look like a mental illness to care about a being that is not human.

Aasha asked: Animal rights is the idea that animals have rights like people and should not be used for our purposes (such as draft, wool, meat, milk, eggs, experimentation, companionship, etc.)
Animal welfare is the idea that animals can be used and owned by humans as long as they are treated well.
OR, if you are not firmly in either category, why not?
AND, if you disagree with my generalized descriptions of each group, why?
P.S. I have a dog so obviously I am in the animal welfare category, but I am not “against” anything, just curious about your beliefs :-).

Some Guy asked: I think one of them makes up extreemists like PETA and the other makes up realistic organizations like the Humane Society.
Don’t try to tell me how good an orgainzation PETA is in your answers, just tell me the difference between the two. I don’t know whether I’m supportive of animal rights or animal welfare.
Gee, Mr. Dorkface, was I not clear about my opinion of PETA when I said that they were extreemists? I will try to make it more clear next time.
D’Mundo, this is the only place where I can catagorize this question and get a serious answer. The last time I made the mistake of catagorizing this anywhere else I got a lot of “who cares” and “we don’t all have to be vegitarians!” and other load of crap answers. I put this here because a vegitarian usually cares deeply about animals and will know something about the subject and won’t tell me “who cares?”.
I got the joke the first time, Mr. Dorkface. It’s not funny.
